Yes We Can: Obama Has My Vote
February 4, 2008 |
As a self described political junkie, I thought I would have made my decision on who to nominate early on in the campaign. I thought that I was disgusted enough with this administration that I would rush to support a new presidential hopeful and pour my heart into their campaign. But I didn’t.
I think it was for that reason, my disgust with the Bush administration, that made me take my time in making my decision. We have endured enough in the past eight years, and I would rather have my eyeballs ripped out than have to live under a Republican administration for another four or eight years.
And now, with only eight days left until the Virginia primary, and on the eve of Super Tuesday, I feel compelled to make a decision.
I am voting for Barack Obama because… (I’ll spare you the narrative form because I tend to ramble)
…if Hillary Clinton wins and serves two terms, we will have witnessed 28 years of Bush Clinton Bush Clinton. I cannot bring myself to contribute to something that reeks of nepotism and is simply against what I believe this country stands for.
…I just can not seem to understand Mrs. Clinton’s position on the war. I do not mind when a candidate honestly changes their position for logical and explicable reasons. We are humans and we change our minds. Her position is simply vague, and that is not something I can depend on.
…Obama stood firmly against one of the worst planned and executed wars in American history, and possibly the most damaging for this country’s future, when not many others did. R-e-s-p-e-c-t.
…I want to tell my children one day that I voted for the first African American president, and we made history.
…I believe Obama is infinitely smarter than the fool we currently have in the White House. Experience was not a prerequisite for Bush, why should it be for Obama?
…I believe Obama has a lot to learn about Washington, and I do not mind supporting a candidate who is willing to learn rather than someone who is a pompous know it all.
…I will be critical of your statements and your actions, Mr. Obama. I will speak out when you unequivocally support Israel in its actions against 1.5 million caged Gazans. But I also understand that you are being pressured like every other politician in Washington, and the burden is on me to try to change this suffocating perspective– as an American tax payer, a believer in American values, and a believer in your message of change. The burden is on you to extend your promise of change to our foreign policy as well.
I am voting for Barack Obama because I believe he has the potential to change the America we live in today. I do not believe he will change Washington, because Washington cannot be changed over night, or over four years. But we need new blood in Washington. We need it desperately. And we can make it happen. YES. WE. CAN.
“Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead

the link above has some interesting points related to the posting you made.
I am a little bit confused whether Obama is really pro-Palestinian but keeping it quite for political reasons, or is he just another go-israel-go cheerleader?
What makes you think he is just complying to pressure?
What makes you believe he won’t comply again when he is in the oval office?
marcy– Thanks for the link! I’m afraid these ‘calculations’ will not be that helpful, because politicians say things they don’t mean and mean things they don’t say… We’ll just have to use our judgment and make the least worst decision, unfortunately.
Jimmy– I do not think Obama is pro-Palestinians and hiding it for political reasons. And I think he will face even more pressure when in the Oval office than now. Still, I think the other candidates are much more in tune with the DC lobby scene and are more involved with many lobbyists already.
[…] Most importantly, however, a huge responsibility rests on the shoulders of those who will vote in the next few weeks. Our country has been through a lot over the past eight years, and our president is responsible for many “mistakes” that we will have to deal with for years to come. In choosing the candidate for president, I not only pondered their positions on the subjects I care most about—civil rights, foreign policy, education, health care, the economy—but also their chance of winning in the general election. My stomach churns at the thought of another Republican in the White House for four or eight more years. I simply do not know what I would do with myself. And that’s why I will vote for Barack Obama. Go, Moi! i’m glad i finally read this post. i was talking to my sis in law recently, (i usually like her take on politics), and she’s not voting this time (surprisingly!) b/c she thinks obama has no chance, and clinton is just evil, as is the repub party…. so i was confused. but this is encouraging.
wow. it’s as inspiring as obama’s “yes we can” speech. kudos!
